British Columbia’s NDP premier, John Horgan, met with Unifor members from Local 2301 during a stop in Kitimat on March 27.

After some brief remarks, premier Horgan fielded questions from the audience about northern B.C. issues and resource jobs in the region.

“Unlike his predecessor, this premier takes an interest in the people of Kitimat,” said Sean O’Driscoll, Unifor Local 2301 president. “Premier Horgan doesn’t take the north for granted.”

Horgan spoke about his work with federal counterparts to beat back the proposed U.S. tariffs on aluminum. He complimented the Unifor delegation for its role in presenting a united front against the tariffs.

The premier also spoke passionately about defending Canadian softwood lumber jobs from the tariffs that the U.S. has levied over the past year, noting the critical role that the forestry industry plays in the province.

“We look forward to working with premier Horgan on protecting good, union jobs,” said Unifor B.C. Area Director Gavin McGarrigle, who was present during the session. “B.C. has incredible resource wealth that has to be strategically and sustainably managed with First Nation partners for the benefit of all British Columbians.”
