As of July 25, 2018 three Unifor locals are on strike, or locked-out and your support and solidarity is needed. Unifor local 522 members accepted a tentative agreement ending their five-week strike. Read this short update to learn about the current struggles of workers in different areas and how you and your local can take action to offer support. Together our union is 315,000 members from coast to coast to coast – let’s keep that line strong!
Local 597, at D-J Composites is locked out in Gander, Newfoundland
There are 32 aerospace workers that have been locked out since December of 2016. For the past year and half the employer has refused to abide by the normally accepted practices of collective bargaining and has been found guilty twice by the provincial labour board of bad faith bargaining. D-J composites is seeking to freeze or cut wages, disregard seniority rights, and has attempted to bust the union.

Local 229, at the Port Arthur Health Centre is on strike in Thunder Bay, Ontario
Workers at the Port Arthur Health Centre, all women, are members of local 229, working as appointment secretaries, medical aides and in medical records have been on strike for over 100 days. Despite being on strike for over three months now, the employer is unwilling to listen, and no progress has been made on critical issues of precarious work contracts or insufficient compensation for work. The employer seems bent on continuing to devalue women’s work and make profits off the back of workers.

Local 6000, at Oldcastle is on strike in Montreal, Quebec
Unifor Local 6000 of the Oldcastle unit went on strike on July 6. These workers are facing off against an employer who’s labour practices have shown no regard for the basic needs of workers. The employer has proposed monetary concessions and has demonstrated an unwillingness to make improvements to non-monetary issues such as employee turnover, work schedules, breaks, and vacation periods.
Now is the time to take action. Here are three ways you can put pressure on Oldcastle:

- Call Oldcastle at (514) 640-5355 and tell them to offer these Unifor members a fair deal!
