Unifor is unequivocally united against white supremacy, racism, and bigotry in all its forms.
The recent events when white supremacists marched, heavily armed, in Charlottesville, Virginia are a call for all workers to unite and send clear message against hate. Our union is calling on all to speak out and act. Workers must send a message that these racist actions, including violent fights with counter-protesters and the events that left three people dead and dozens injured, will not be tolerated. Racism everywhere must be categorically denounced and actively opposed.
The trade union movement was built by working people determined to bring justice and equity to workplaces and to our society at large. Our greatest progress has come when we have understood the importance of combating discrimination and uniting all workers. We will not let racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, xenophobia, religious discrimination and oppression divide us because an injury to one is an injury to all. Let us not be silent.
Unifor stands in solidarity with the people who have been targeted, faced violence, or lost loved ones at the hands of hate, these are the people that are on the side of justice.
We must also remember that this is not isolated to Virginia or to the United States. Canada has a history and a growing trend of ideological right-wing and regressive forces in cities and towns from coast to coast to coast that seek to fuel racism and hate.
There is no equivalency between white supremacists and the brave people who oppose their hate. It is not only honourable to unite in solidarity against hate, it is necessary to build a more equitable world. Being an ally matters.
Unifor asks all members, retirees and allies to challenge oppression and inequality through activism and political action, demanding redress for past wrongs, and pushing forward to a better future.
The workers, united, will never be defeated.
